Soft Tissue Injuries (Thumb)
A soft tissue injury affecting muscles, tendons and ligaments of the thumb are very common. The thumb can be easily stubbed and the ligaments stretched or torn in sports activities such as basketball or soccer. The ligaments can also be injured if the metacarpophalangeal joint is abducted from trying to catch a fall. These injuries affect the ulnar collateral ligament at the MCP joint and are commonly referred to as Gamerkeeper's Thumb and Skier's Thumb. Symptoms include significant pain in the thumb and instability of the thumb joint. A support or immobilizing splint is usually necessary.
